The background is a screen capture from the The Dark Knight. The two and a half hour Blue Ray movie was compressed to 1GB at full 1080 resolution and this is the level of detail it still has.

Coming from the dark ages where I used to convert my VHSC tapes via a gadget called Dazzle what plugged into the parallel port into a format called Real Media and took my screen grabs with a thing called Snappy.

The frame rate was 15 the size 352x288 and the compression was 185 Kbps for video and 32 Kbps for audio in mono.

That was somewhere in the second half of the last decade in the last Millennium and the result was awful when I look at them now. 15 years ago I thought it looked pretty good for the compression, but by then we had postage stamp size video clips and 240p with 15 fps.

My findings are originating from the desire to get good results with the modern hybrid cameras but if you want to put all your DVDs and Blue Rays on your Media Center Hard Drive, you find your answers here how to reduce a Blue Ray to less the 2 GB and still have 5.1 sound and also a 2.0 channel.

With lots of visual samples you will find easily your optimal compromise between quality and size.
